ICOFORT (ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Fortifications and Military Heritage) is an international body dedicated to the study, evaluation, and protection of castles, fortifications, and fortified cities worldwide. It promotes international research collaboration and contributes to the conservation and sustainable management of military heritage.

Japanese early modern castles, together with Ming–Qing walled cities in China and Joseon-period fortifications in Korea, represent internationally significant cultural heritage and are central to ongoing research and conservation efforts.

The ICOFORT International Conference will be held in Matsue from 8–11 November 2026, with the support of the cities of Matsue, Inuyama, and Matsumoto, all home to National Treasure castle keeps. The conference will include symposia, academic presentations, and excursions, fostering international dialogue and advancing global research on fortification heritage.

ICOFORT（城塞軍事遺産国際学術委員会）は、ICOMOSの学術委員会の一つとして、城郭、要塞、城塞都市など軍事に関わる遺産の研究・評価・保護を担う国際的組織です。世界各地に所在する城塞軍事遺産の価値づけや保全方策の提言、国際的な学術交流の推進を目的として活動を展開しています。

日本の近世城郭は世界に誇る文化遺産として国際的な関心を集めており、同時期に建設された中国の明清期城墻都市や韓国の朝鮮時代都城とともに、世界遺産登録を視野に入れた保護や研究の対象として注目されています。これらの遺産は、市民参加に支えられながら、国際的な評価と学術的議論の広がりを見せています。

このたび、日本の城郭都市を世界に開き、専門家と市民の対話と交流を促進することを目的として、ICOFORT国際会議を松江にて2026年11月8日（日）から11日（水）にかけて開催いたします。 国宝天守を有する松江・犬山・松本の三市の協力のもと、記念シンポジウムや学術発表、エクスカーションを通じて、古代から現代に至る城郭・城塞遺産の諸課題とその魅力について広く議論し、国際的な研究交流のさらなる深化を目指します。
